HackerOne featured in Forbes' 30 under 30

Great news for HackerOne! The company made it to the Forbes list of 30 under 30 this year, the most definitive gathering of today’s leading young changemakers and innovators under the age of 30.

HackerOne has its roots in Groningen and still has an office here. Co-founders Michiel Prins and Jobert Abma both studied at the Hanze University and started Online24 (HackerOne’s predecessor) in Groningen.

In the past two and a half years, things really took off for HackerOne, raking in a whopping $34 million in investments (25 from New Enterprise Associates and 9 from Benchmark, who also invested in companies like Twitter, Yelp and eBay). Tech giants like Yahoo, Twitter, Adobe, Dropbox and Snapchat also started using the services of the three year old company, that’s now based both in Groningen and Silicon Valley. According to Forbes, HackerOne has paid hackers about $12 million in bug bounties.

So what does HackerOne do exactly? They basically make the internet a safer place, by bringing ethical hackers and companies together. HackerOne is a platform or a marketplace, where companies can hire hackers to find bugs, leaks and other nasty stuff. Tech companies offer hackers bounties, HackerOne collects 20%.

30 Under 30

Forbes 30 Under 30 is a set of lists issued annually since 2011, by Forbes magazine and some of its regional editions. The 2017 list recognizes 600 business and industry figures, with 30 selected in twenty industries each. The list was originally inspired by the rising tide young entrepreneurs, mostly in the tech business, making big waves and earning even bigger bucks and world-wide followings.

It’s also notoriously difficult to make the Forbes list. This year, there were more than 15,000 nominations for the 600 spots, which is an acceptance rate of less than 4%. To give you some reference; it’s harder to get on the 30 under 30 list than it is to get into Harvard or Stanford University.
